WILMINGTON — Dr. Benjamin Thomas Ellis, 77, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center.
He was born Feb. 13, 1941, in Shelby, son of the late Bruce Herbert Ellis and Vivian Adams Ellis.
Dr. Ellis graduated from Shelby High School, UNC Chapel Hill and UNC School of Dentistry. He practiced dentistry in Shelby for 35 years.
Among many accomplishments, he was a founder of North Carolina State Bank, member of The Church of Redeemer and was a junior warden and an active member of the community. He never met a stranger and made everyone happier by his wit and sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Joy Ellis and Ann Keeter.
Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Falls Ellis; daughters, Sally Grogan, and her husband, Steve Grogan, Beth Harry, Mary Catherine Joseph, and her husband, William Joseph, and Cookie Rudisill, and her husband, Blaine Rudisill; grandchildren, Ben Grogan, John Carter Grogan, Elizabeth Harry, Bishop Harry, Ellis Joseph, Vivi Joseph, Blaine Rudisill and Catherine Rudisill; brothers, Dr. William Ellis, retired U.S. Army Col. Herb Ellis and Edward Ellis.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, Dec. 7, at St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound Episcopal Church, Wilmington, with the Rev. Richard Elliott officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church.
