David Earl Sikes, 77, transformed his yard into a showplace during the holidays and Azalea Festival

WILMINGTON — David Earl Sikes, 77, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and husband, born in Whiteville to Oscar D. and Marie P. Sikes, left behind the pain and suffering of many years of mortal life and crossed over into life eternal Friday, Nov. 16, 2018, at Davis Health Care Center. He spent almost all of his life living in Wilmington and was married 54 years to his wife, Saundra.

David was employed at A&P grocery for nine years and Best Products for 15 years, where he was a warehouse manager.

He served in the U.S. Army, active duty for two years with 13 months in Korea and four years in the U.S. Army Reserve. He became disabled in 1992 with continued declining in health.

Prior to becoming disabled, he was an avid gardener whose yard was a showplace at Christmas and during spring and Azalea Festival, and was on the garden tour at their request in 1987.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Penny Sikes; father, Oscar D. Sikes; beloved grandmother, Dora L. Penny; aunts, Mozelle McCabe and Juanita (Terry Bug) Smith; and uncle, Jimmy Penny; as well as beloved pets, Shelba, Weasel, Baby and Missy.

He is survived by his wife, Saundra H. Sikes of the home; daughter, Cynthia (Cindy) Hollingsworth, and her husband, Terry, of Hampstead; grandchildren, Parker and Karson Hollingsworth of Hampstead; sister, Betty Jo Alford, and her husband, Gerald “Jerry” of Wilmington; nephew, Gregory Jordan; great-nephews, Gary Smith of Wilmington and Eddie McCabe of Wilmington; and like-a-daughter, Kimberly Faulk, and her husband, Jimmy. He is also survived by good friends who supported and assisted the family for many years, and without their help and love, these years would have been more difficult. They include but are not limited to, Janice Brown of Castle Hayne, Larry and Laura Wilson of Wilmington, Stephen and Dorothy Thornburg of Richmond, Indiana, and Georgia and Jerry Barnhill of Supply.

The family wishes to thank Brookdale of Wilmington, Davis Health Care, Porters Neck and Lower Cape Fear Hospice for the excellent care given our loved one as well as the support and love for our family they gave to us, his family.

A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel with Pastor Jeff Nichols officiating. The family will receive and welcome visitors and friends beginning at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, also at the mortuary, prior to the service. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens, Wilmington.
