Kenneth ‘Ken’ Haydu, 67, sailed the world as a Merchant Marine

SOUTHPORT — Kenneth “Ken” Haydu, 67, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018. Mr. Haydu was born Aug. 8, 1951, to the late George and Wanda Haydu.

He was a graduate of King’s Point Academy. Ken spent his life going to sea as a U.S. Merchant Marine. He had sailed all over the world, was an avid reader, and really enjoyed his retirement.

Mr. Haydu was preceded in death by a son, Steve Haydu. Survivors include his wife, Darla LeClerc; two daughters, Terrie Aberle, and her husband, Adam, and their three children, Stephen Aberle, Landon Aberle and Marlowe Aberle; daughter, Sarah Haydu, and her fiancée, Glenn Sanderson; daughter-in-law, Cori McQueen, and her son, Jack Haydu; two sisters, Adrienne Haydu, and her son, Jesse Filion, and Michele Poppe, and her husband, Charlie; and two stepchildren, Michael LeClerc and Misty LeClerc.

A time of visitation will be held from 5 to 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 19, at Southport Baptist Church, CMC Building.

In memory of Ken, the family requests that memorials be made to the Steve Haydu St. Patrick’s Day Lo Tide Run, P.O. Box 1116, Carolina Beach, NC 28428; or to the Southport Maritime Museum, 204 E. Moore St., Southport, NC 28461.
