WILMINGTON — Paul Jarard Rusk passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2018, at NHRMC with his loving wife by his side.

Paul was a loving son, father, brother and grandfather. Above all else, he was loved by all who were able to have the opportunity to call him a friend. Paul was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He was born in the mountains in Westwood, California, a place he loved to visit that held special memories for him. He spent the majority of his youth in Reno, Nevada. He attended Sparks High School before enlisting in the U.S. Armed Forces. From 1972 to 1976, he served as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy at Camp Lejeune. During this time, he met his wife, Retha Brunjes, and they were married in 1975 in the LDS temple in Washington, D.C.

He attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. He attended Cape Fear Community College and received certification as a LPN, thus beginning his 30-plus-year career in nursing. Paul served on the North Carolina Board of Nursing for more than 12 years. He also loved his two fur babies, Rufus and Lil’ Man.

While he enjoyed being a nurse, his family was his first love. He held his family close in his heart. He was the proud father of three sons, Joshua, Andrew and Aaron. There was nothing more he loved to do than be at one of his sons’ sporting events; whether it be a Friday night football game, a wrestling match on a Tuesday night or softball game on a Saturday. His grandson, Jackson, and granddaughter, Cara, were the light of his life. He loved watching Jackson’s baseball and basketball games and holding Cara.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Mary Rusk; infant sister, Mary Rusk; mother-in-law and father in-law, Alfred and Vera Brunjes; sister-in-law, Cynthia Brunjes; brother-in-law, Vance Brunjes; and nephew, Ethan Brunjes.

He is survived by his wife, Retha Rusk; sons, Joshua, and his wife, Allison, Andrew, and his fiancé, Malari, and Aaron; grandchildren, Jackson and Cara; sister, Ellen Rusk of Reno, Nevada; brothers, Terry Rusk (Susie) of Verdi, Nevada, Steve Rusk (Cathy) of Chicago, Illinois, and Michael Rusk (Tammy) of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister-in-law, Amy Brunjes of Leland; brother-in-law, Alfred Brunjes Jr. (Sharon) of Wilmington; aunts and uncles, William “Hank” Fisher (Barbara), Bob Fisher, Ida Mae Davis and Barbara Fisher; and many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly.

A graveside service will be held for Paul at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 13, at Greenlawn Memorial Park conducted by Bishop Jason Allen. Greenlawn Memorial Park is located at the corner of 17th Street and Shipyard Boulevard, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Paul’s memory may be made online or by mail to American Red Cross, Hurricane Florence Relief Fund, P.O. Box 37839, Boone, IA 50037.
