Mary Lou “Bunkey” Watkins, 71, was born Jan. 9, 1947, in Southport. She departed this life Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018, at Wellington Nursing Facility, Wilmington.

Mary Lou was raised in Bolivia with her loving grandparents, David and Beatrice Galloway. Upon graduating from Brunswick County Training School in 1965, she moved to Vineland, New Jersey, with her mother, Inez Branch. While in New Jersey, she attended nursing school. She worked in the nursing profession for many years including the time she resided in Los Angeles, California, in the late 1990s, at which time she performed multiple duties.

She relocated back to Brunswick County, opened her own business and became well known as a hair stylist and entrepreneur with her husband, the Rev. James Watkins. Mary Lou was a loving and kind person, always willing to lend a helping hand in any way she could. Her passion was helping the elderly, mentoring the young and counseling in confidentiality. She will be missed by many, and her memory will live on.

Mary Lou leaves to treasure her memories, her husband, the Rev. James Watkins; stepdaughters, Kathy Allen, and her son, Kenneth Babson, and Terri Allen, and her son, Wesley Mitchell; aunts, Vernell Salmon of Southport, Eva Jennings of Altamonte Springs, Florida, and Juanita Scott of Jamaica, New York; uncle, Thaddeus “Danny” Galloway, and his wife, Joyce, of Bolivia; sisters, Norma Lee Branch of Bridgeton, New Jersey, and Denise Brown of Florida; brother, Gregory Brown; godson, Larry “J.R.” Bell of Vineland, New Jersey; goddaughter, Tameca Mitchell of Detroit; special cousins, Thomas L. Brown of Maryland, Marion Moore Hurst of Vineland, New Jersey, and Carolyn Smith and Stephanie Williams, both of Bolivia; sister-in-law, Sharon Brown of Maryland; and a host of cousins, family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Inez Branch; stepfather, Daniel Branch; father, Cleveland Brown; and brother, Cleveland “Alexander” (Sonny) Brown.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 7, at Little Macedonia Baptist Church, Supply, with the Rev. Jesse Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Marsh Branch Cemetery,  Winnabow.
