Sally H. Gellman, 93, librarian who introduced readers to the joy of reading

WILMINGTON — Sally H. Gellman, 93, formerly of Monticello, New York, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018. She was born Dec. 11, 1924, in New York City to the late Jennie and Louis Heck.

Sally graduated from Seward Park High in NYC at 15 years of age. She went on to attain a B.A. at Brooklyn College. Sally received a Master’s of Library Science from SUNY Albany. She was the former director of the Crawford Library in Monticello and also worked as a librarian for Monticello School District and SUNY Sullivan, New York. Her passion was books and introducing others to the joy of reading.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Emanuel Gellman; and her two brothers and sisters. She is survived by her loving daughters, Dr. Michelle Appelbaum, and her husband, Joel, of Orange County, New York, Lauren Tucker, and her husband, Sheldon of Wilmington; two grandchildren, Edward Appelbaum of Houston, Texas, and Jessica Tucker of Wilmington.

Sally was a member of the Garden Club, B’Nai Israel Synagogue and Jewish Women International. She loved the arts, museums, music, and theatre and history.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at B’Nai Israel Cemetery with burial following.
