WILMINGTON — Betty Smith Warren, 91, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2018. She was born June 30, 1927, in Wilmington, a daughter of the late Edgar Leroy (Lee) Smith and Ada Penelope Hamilton Smith.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church since 1942 and was part of the many activities of the youth program with her daughter and adult programs with her husband. She attended the Tuesday seniors’ lunches every week and looked forward to sitting with her church friends. She was a longtime member of the Hanover Seaside Club since 1968, where she and her husband rocked on the porch every Sunday afternoon and greeted everyone as they went to and from the beach.

After her husband’S death, she greeted friends from the upstairs porch. Rockers always were filled with friends “pulling up a chair” and then going on to the beach. She joined Cape Fear Garden Club in 1997 after her husband’s retirement. She served as their librarian for many years. She was one of the founding members of the Pine Valley Garden Club in the early 1960s and a member of the Women’s Club for many years until going to work with her husband. She enjoyed people and being part of organizations with a purpose. She never met a stranger, met you with a smile and counted you as a friend from your meeting.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James V. “Pat” Warren, CPA; parents; and her brothers and sisters, Eloise S. Rust, Anabel S. Eaton, Harry Moore Smith (Maude), Cassius Lyon Smith (Mildred), Leon Dudley Smith (Sarah), Edmond Devane Smith (Sarah), Richard Pearson (R.P.) Smith (Libby), Robert Hamilton Smith and Michael Smith.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet Lee Warren of Wilmington; beloved sister-in-law, Doris Walden Smith of North Augusta, South Carolina; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Linda Calhoun, Dr. William McLeod and Dr. William Sallings for their kindness and generosity over the years.

A funeral service, officiated by the Rev. Jim Everette, will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 5, at First Baptist Church, 411 Market St., with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. Interment in Oakdale Cemetery will be private.
