WILMINGTON — George Thomas “Tommy” Cochrane III, 79, died Wednesday, June 20, 2018, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center in Wilmington, surrounded by his family.

Tommy is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Patsy Alexander Cochrane. They married in Raleigh on June 20, 1970. End of life came for Tommy on their 48th wedding anniversary. He is also survived by his two children, daughter, Elizabeth Cochrane Burgess (Christopher), and son, William Alexander Cochrane, both of Wilmington; one beautiful granddaughter, Isabella; sister, Dorothy Bernholz of Chapel Hill; and many nieces and nephews.

Born Sept. 26, 1938, in Dayton, Ohio, he was the son of the late George Thomas Cochrane II and Elizabeth Hendon Cochrane. He was the eldest of two children. As a young man, Tommy attended Christ School in Asheville. He then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following this, he served in the U.S. Army for a brief period. Tommy then embarked on a successful, 44-year real estate career from 1967 to 2011. He worked with Key Homes then Plaza Associates of Raleigh before creating his own business, Cochrane and Company Realtors. His devotion to this career earned him the Realtor Emeritus Award in Raleigh from the National Association of Realtors. Following this, he relocated in retirement to Wilmington. Tommy was a devoted husband, father, granddaddy and friend. He was a faithful companion to his beloved puppy dog, “Ozzy,” and loved books and history. His primary interest was his family.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 26, at Andrews Market Street Chapel, 1617 Market St., Wilmington.
