Arthur Leon Applegate, 84, active with Waterway Art Association for many years

OCEAN ISLE BEACH — Dr. Arthur Leon Applegate, 84, died Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at Novant Hospital.

He was born July 9, 1933, in East McKeesport, Pa., to the late Ivan and Dorothy Applegate. The family moved to Sycamore, Illinois, and then to Winston-Salem, where he graduated from high school. He served three years in the U.S. Army, where he attended Russian Language School and was stationed in Germany. He received his B.S. degree from Wake Forest University, his Master’s Degree from the University of South Carolina and his Ph.D. in Embryology from Emory University. He taught at Newberry College, LSU, Western Kentucky University and for 25 years at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg.

Dr. Applegate was involved with the Waterway Art Association of Brunswick County for many years.

His survivors include his wife of 60 years, Caroline Overcash Applegate; son, Dr. Michael Applegate, and his wife, Tammy, of Ocean Isle Beach; daughter, Martha Applegate, and her husband, Donald Delaney, of Marion; grandchildren, Dan Applegate, Kevin Applegate, Elizabeth Applegate, Matthew Applegate and Duncan Delaney.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 29, at St. Luke Lutheran Church ELCA with the Rev. Henry B. Rehder, pastor, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Luke Lutheran Church ELCA, 5869 Ocean Highway West, Ocean Isle Beach, NC 28469.
