Donald J. Ryan, 94, Navy veteran who served during World War II

SUNSET BEACH — Donald J. Ryan, 94, former resident of Bronx, New York, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2018, at his home. His final days were spent surrounded by his family.

He was born July 31, 1923, in Bronx, New York, to John and Loretta (KehL) Ryan. Mr. Ryan served U.S. Navy during World War II on a P.T. boat as a gunner for three years in the South Pacific.

After the War, he worked for Consolidated Edison Company in New York City as an underground splicer for 30 years. In 1984, Mr. Ryan came to retire in North Carolina with his wife Corinne, where they built their retirement home in Sunset Beach. They enjoyed traveling the country for many years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years of marriage, Corinne.

Surviving are his daughter, Diane Ryan Mikula, and her husband, Gerard; son, Thomas Ryan; granddaughter, Martine Julia Johnson; and great-grandson, D.J. Ortiz.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 24, at White Funeral and Cremation Service, Shallotte Chapel. A funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m., Friday morning, May 25, at The Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, North Myrtle Beach.
