Kevin J. O’Sullivan, 87, retired teacher and special education principal

WILMINGTON — Kevin J. O’Sullivan, 87, died Thursday, April 19, 2018. He was born March 19, 1931, the son of the late Sean and Eileen Carroll O’Sullivan.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Miller; daughter, Devon Knutsen; son, Kerry O’Sullivan; and daughter-in-law, Kathi O’Sullivan.

Mr. O’Sullivan was a graduate of Rice High School in Manhattan and Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, Class of 1951. He held advanced degrees from Hunter College and New York University. He spent his professional career as a teacher and special education principal for the New York City Board of Education.

In retirement, he turned his attentions to the stock market and financial planning for family and friends. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1954 on the minesweeper USS Tern. Since moving to Wilmington 22 years ago, he was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Mr. O’Sullivan was an accomplished bridge player, and avid reader, a Notre Dame Football fan, a crossword puzzle enthusiast and a lover of trivia games.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Anne (Hyland) O’Sullivan; brother, Emmet P. O’Sullivan of New York; son-in-law, John Knutsen of Sarasota, Florida; daughters, Gael O’Sullivan of Bethesda, Maryland, Noreen O’Sullivan, and her husband, Jerry Morell, of San Antonio, Texas, Erin O’Sullivan-Jennings, and her husband, the Rev. Mark Jennings of Augusta, Mich.; stepson, George Sutton, and his wife, Kristina Sutton, of Wake Forest, North Carolina; 19 grandchildren, John Ryan Knutsen, and his wife, Jessica, Kevin Knutsen, Kara Knutsen, Kyle Knutsen, Sean O’Sullivan, Alison O’Sullivan, Coleen O’Sullivan, Kerry Joseph “K.J.” O’Sullivan, Sean Johnson, Shannon Johnson, Thomas Morell, and his wife, Hannah, Brian Morell, Kathryn “Katie” Morell, Kelly Morell, Brandon Jennings, Brianne “Annie” Ferreira, and her wife, Stacey, Kendall Jennings, Matthew Sutton and Timothy Sutton; and one great-grandchild, Jack Knutsen.

A funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m., Friday, April 27, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church conducted by the Rev. John McGee. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, April 26, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial contributions be made to Trinity Grove, 631 Junction Creek Drive, Wilmington, NC 28412; or Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 6650 Carolina Beach Road, Wilmington, NC 28412.
