HAMPSTEAD — Jill C. Adams, 75, formerly of Warsaw, N.C., and Waterloo, Iowa, died Monday, April 16, 2018, at Stonebridge Assisted Living, Hampstead, N.C.
She was born Dec. 16, 1942, in Moline, Ill., to Erling A. Michaelsen and Marion Tunnicliff Michaelsen. She married Jerry R. Adams of Ottumwa, Iowa, on May 4, 1962, in Nevada, Story County, Iowa.
Raised in Rock Island, she graduated from Rock Island High School in 1960. She attended Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., and Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Later, she studied portrait art under the tutorage of James Howard Sandin of New York.
An active homemaker participating in Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, she turned to pet therapy with her mentor, Margret Ormard, and German Short Hair, Nadia, socializing with residents of the Bremer County Home. As a talented multi-media artist in landscapes and portraits, she loved to paint children with disabilities, and picturing them as she saw them, not as they saw themselves.
In retirement, she devoted her energy to her husband and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ann Michaelsen Courtney and Suzanne Michaelsen Carlton; and brother, Jon E. Michaelsen.
She is survived by Jerry, her husband of 55 years; daughter, Heather Adams of Wingate, N.C.; son, Michael Adams of Des Moines, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Sharon Michaelsen of Geneseo, Ill., and Yvonne Sipe (Dan) of Des Moines, Iowa; and two grandchildren, Joshua and Alida Ziegenmeyer.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 21, at Topsail Presbyterian Church.
