WILMINGTON — Ruby Raynor Bissette died Sunday, March 25, 2018. She was born Nov. 23, 1921, in Wilmington, N.C., the eldest of the seven children of Sabra and Dexter Raynor.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Samuel D. Bissette.
She is survived by her son, David Bissette (Mark Arucan) of Alexandria, Va.; daughter, Sabra Ledent (Jacques Ledent) of Montreal; and two grandchildren, Christophe Ledent of Ottawa, Canada, and Tristan Ledent of Montreal, Canada. She is also survived by her two sisters and a brother, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Ruby entered the nursing program at James Walker Memorial Hospital during the war and worked at the hospital after graduation. Meanwhile, she was swept off her feet by a young banker-turned-soldier, Sam Bissette.
She was widely known as a gifted cook, and her many friends enjoyed putting their feet under her table. She was also known for her love of chocolate — her favorite “medicine.” She was also her husband’s number-one fan, cheering on the painting career he launched after he retired from the savings and loan business.
While raising two children, Ruby was an active volunteer in many of Wilmington’s charities, as well as her church. She was also a member of the Carolina Yacht Club and the Cape Fear Country Club. And she enjoyed her longtime bridge clubs with her friends of many years. Her bridge club days were sacrosanct.
The family is grateful to Ruby’s loving and generous caregivers, Carol Barnhardt and the staff at Coastal Cove.
After a private burial at Oakdale Cemetery, a memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 29, at the First Baptist Church of Wilmington. After the service, the family will receive guests in the church parlor.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Shepherd Center of Wilmington, 811 Martin St., Wilmington, NC 28401.
