SOUTHPORT — Capt. Robert Edward ‘Buck’ Smith, 79, of Southport, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2018.

Capt. Smith was born July 5, 1938. He was the son of the late James Edward Smith and Geneva Hickman Smith. Born and raised in Southport, he was a graduate of Southport High School.

Capt. Smith was a Cape Fear River Pilot for 43 years. Buck enjoyed playing basketball, hunting, snow skiing, fishing and Tar Heels basketball.

Survivors include his son, Darin Smith of Bolivia; daughter, Terre Smith Wrenn, and her husband, John, of Zebulon; two brothers, Billy Smith of Florida and Chuck Smith of Southport; three grandchildren, Jeremy Wrenn, Julia Wrenn and Davis Smith; and his dog, Cash. He was preceded in death by a son, Dean Smith; and brother, Jimmy “Bullet” Smith.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 17, in Northwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southport Maritime Museum, 204 E. Moore St., Southport, NC 28461.
