James Daniel Conlon, 81, decorated Navy pilot

CALABASH — Retired U.S. Navy Reserve Cmdr. James Daniel Conlon, 81, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017, surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 26, 1936, in Beverly, Mass., and grew up in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass. He was a graduate of Saint Ann High School, Gloucester, Mass.; Rider University, Lawrenceville, N.J.; and the National Graduate Trust School at Northwestern University.

James served his country in the U.S. Navy as a decorated Navy pilot. He served as a board member on the New York State Bankers Association; St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center in New Jersey; Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart, Yardley, Pa.; the United Way; and Granville Academy in Trenton, N.J. He retired from Chase Manhattan Bank in New York. James had been a member of St. Brendan’s Catholic Church in Shallotte for 15 years. He was a member of the Joseph J. McGarry Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; American Legion, Calabash; and the Elks.

James was preceded in death by his parents, John F. Conlon Sr. and Rita Lynch Conlon; and brother, John F. Conlon Jr.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 50 years, Mary; son, James D. Conlon Jr. (Erica) of Medford, N.J.; daughter, Moira F. Fallon (Steven) of Sinking Spring, Pa.; son, Brendan M. Conlon (J. Leocadia) of Reston, Va.; and grandchildren, Bridget, Jonathan, Shane, Katherine, Greta, Madeleine and Luke.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 10, at Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 11, with military honors at St. Brendan’s Catholic Church, Shallotte.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in James’ name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
