Perry Jefferson ‘Buddy’ Whitman Jr.

WILMINGTON — Perry Jefferson “Buddy” Whitman Jr., 84, passed away Monday, Dec. 4, 2017, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was born March 28, 1933, in Wilmington, N.C., to Perry Jefferson Whitman Sr. and wife, Ollie Pope. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Muriel, Marie and Betty; and son, Perry Jefferson “Jeff” Whitman III.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Sandra Gaskill Whitman; younger sister, Joyce Bowers, and her husband, Bob; children, David M. Whitman, and his partner, Kristin Halls, Teresa W. Nabours, and her husband, Clint, and Dennis L. Whitman, and his partner, Rudina Hernandez; and nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Perry served in the U.S. Air Force for four years during the Korean War. He worked as a chemical operator at Riegelwood Paper Mill retiring after 47 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion and BPO Elks Club. He served the New Hanover Class of 1951 for 64 years.

Perry had a love of life, people and the water. He loved fishing, oystering and clamming. His house was always open to friends, family and classmates. When not on the water or entertaining, he made the best peanut brittle you will ever eat. This man was a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle and friend to so many and will surely be missed.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel with the Rev. Paul Waters officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the mortuary. Interment, with military honors, will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, 520 North 15th St., Wilmington.
