WILMINGTON — Nellie “Nell” Boggs Carpenter, 97, passed away Saturday, Nov. 25, 2017, at Trinity Grove. Nell was born Oct. 24, 1920, in Oconee County, S.C., to Homer Richard Boggs and Betty Kelly Boggs. Nell lived a life full of service, faith and family.

She graduated from Winthrop College in 1941 and acquired a master’s degree in library science from East Carolina in 1975. She spent 40 years as an educator; the last 28 years were at the former Snipes Elementary School as a librarian. Her first job as a librarian was in Goldsboro, N.C., where she taught school with Andy Griffith.

Nell was a member of Temple Baptist Church for 56 years where she was active as a Sunday school teacher, church librarian and member of the Women’s Missionary Union. She belonged to and was a viable member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the North Carolina Sorosis Club, in which she held several offices. Nell will always be remembered for her wonderful smile that could brighten a room and her dedication to education as well as each office she held within various organizations.

Nell was preceded by husbands, Alva Pringle Lindsey Bass and Marlin Carpenter; and brothers, Roy V. Boggs and Carl D. Boggs.

She is survived by her brother, Alan D. Boggs of Walhalla, S.C., nieces, Maria B. Petrea and Jane B. Ratlif of Charlotte, N.C., Betty Ann Boggs and Carol Lee Lane of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; nephew, James A. Boggs of Grier, S.C.; great-nephews, Michael L. Petrea of Charlotte, N.C., Tyler D. Boggs of Grier, S.C., David R. Lane of New York and Bennett H. Lane from Boston; and several stepchildren including Rose Graham of Lamar, S.C.

Visitation was held Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Andrews Market Street Chapel. A chapel service was conducted by Dr. Steve A. Spangler. Andrews Mortuary transported Nell’s casket to Davenport Funeral Home in Walhalla, S.C., who will coordinate a graveside service. A minister of Walhalla Baptist Church will officiate a graveside service at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 1, at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, Seneca, S.C.
