Major Lee ‘Maj’ White III

Major Lee “Maj” White III, 75, passed away peacefully Friday morning, September 29, 2017 in Wilmington, N.C.

Major is survived by his children, Major White IV (Marta) of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Sara White Trohanis (Wil) of New York, N.Y., and Stephanie White Chalk (Thomas) of Apex, N.C.

He is also survived by his dedicated partner, Tara Deppert of Wilmington, N.C. He is the beloved “Pop” to Skyler Rose Schmetterer and Eleanor Marie Trohanis.

Major was born Oct. 19, 1941, in Scranton, Penn., to Ann Weeks White and Major Lee White Jr. In addition to his parents, Major was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth; and a brother, James White.

Major’s children and loved ones remember him as a charming gentleman with a heartwarming presence that always filled the room; he was always willing to lend a hand, or handkerchief, to a friend in need. Throughout his life, Major never left a new acquaintance as a stranger.

Aside from his adoration for family, Major shared his passions for horse-racing, airplanes and boats with many dear friends, colleagues and customers. He loved spending time on the water and enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends.

The family would like to thank the caregivers and medical staff at New Hanover Medical Center for their expertise, encouragement and comfort during Major’s journey.

A celebration of life is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Andrews Market Street Chapel. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service.

Those wishing to honor Major’s memory are welcome to send flowers or make donations in his name to the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, P.O. Box 834, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
