George Elliott Benedict III, 87, active with North Carolina Senior Games

WILMINGTON — George Elliott Benedict III, 87, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017, at his home.

He was born Nov. 4, 1929, in Tallahassee, Fla., the son of the late George and Beatrice Nightengale Benedict. Mr. Benedict was a graduate of Florida State University and served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II and Korea. He was a longtime resident of Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington.

He had served as scoutmaster for Wrightsville Beach Troop 232 and was active at local and state levels in the North Carolina Senior Games. He was a senior warden and a member of St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Benedict of Wilmington; two sons, George Benedict of Apex, N.C., and Greg Benedict, and his wife, Tamera, of Long Beach, Calif.; and two grandsons, James and Charles of Long Beach, Calif.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 21, at St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrew’s On-the Sound Episcopal Church, 101 Airlie Road, Wilmington, NC 28403; or to the charity of one’s choice.
