WILMINGTON — Margaret Estella Moore Brown, 99, peacefully passed away at her home Sunday, June 25, 2017.
Margaret was born July 29, 1917, the daughter of Alexander and Lila Moore, of Kingston, Ontario. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert B. Brown, M.D.; daughter, Pamela Hatch; and son, Albert Jr.
She is survived by her daughters, Sheila Herron of Raleigh, N.C., and Lauraine Clark of Washington, N.C.; sons, Maynard Brown and Sandy Brown of Wilmington, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and seven-and-a-half great-grandchildren.
At age 62, she graduated with highest honors from UNCW, majoring in English and French, and completed her Master’s Degree in English at UNCW in 1992. She was an avid reader, writer and correspondent.
Her greatest challenge and achievement was her family. She married Albert in 1943, and, after a brief honeymoon, saw him leave to serve in the European Theater during World War II. On his return to Canada, they started their family, first in Kingston, Ontario; then in Baltimore, Md.; Saskatoon Saskatchewan, Canada; and finally settling in Wilmington, N.C., in 1967.
Throughout the triumphs and tragedies of her life she was unfailingly positive and unflappable, facing each challenge with wit, determination, patience, brilliance, kindness and grace. Her greatest gift was her capacity for love, especially for Albert and her family and for others blessed to have been touched by her spirit. She mattered and our world is richer for her presence.
There will be a graveside service at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 1, in Oakdale Cemetery, Wilmington, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to PEO Scholar’s Awards, PEO Treasurer’s Department, 3700 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA 50312; or to the charity of one’s choice.
