Harold Lee Chewning Sr., 81, retired member of Ogden Volunteer Fire Department

WILMINGTON — Harold Lee Chewning Sr., 81, passed away Monday, June 5, 2017, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center, Wilmington, N.C. He was born Sept. 17, 1935, in Wadesboro, N.C.

Harold loved to hunt and fish, especially with his son, grandchildren and his special hunting buddies. He was a retired member of Ogden Volunteer Fire Department. He never met a stranger, as he welcomed and chatted up the many wonderful clients of the Sleep Inn, where he worked for many years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Cornelia Chewning; along with son, Harold Lee Chewning Jr., and his wife, Pam Chewning; grandchildren, Anna Chewning and Harold Lee Chewning III, and his wife, Katelyn; and great-grandson, Harold Lee Chewning IV.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 8, at Ogden Baptist Church with graveside services immediately following in Oleander Memorial Gardens. Visitation will begin at the church at 1 p.m. prior to services. Pallbearers will include Harold Lee Chewning III, Ron Mintz, Bobby Murray, Brian Prevatte, Dean Smith, Brian Westbury. Honorary pallbearers will include Gregory Edens and Dexter Johnson.

Special thanks to all the many earth angels who cared for him. Especially his granddaughter Anna, who assisted so greatly with his care and also his grandson Harold Lee’s little family for the joy they brought to him up with his great-grandson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ogden Baptist Church.
