Melvin Ray Confer, 87, retired from the New York Telephone Company

CAROLINA SHORES — Melvin Ray Confer, 87, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017.

He was born in Peru, Ind., May 8, 1929, a son of the late William Riley Confer and Edith Townsend Confer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Murphy Confer; two granddaughters, Lindsay Jean Bennett and Lorie Rae Bennett; and his beloved pet, Romeo.

Melvin retired from the New York Telephone Company and was a Korean War Veteran serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Surviving are his two daughters, Donna Thompson, and her husband, John, Peter “Pete” of Shallotte and Jean (Jeanie) Confer of Flagstaff, Ariz.; and brother, Billy Gene Confer.

A celebration of life will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 5, at the Brunswick Funeral Service Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Bob Weathers. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will take place on Sunday, March 19, in Brunswick Memorial Gardens Columbarium.
