Lee Roy Armstrong, 83, often called ‘the godfather of bass fishing in Wilmington’

WILMINGTON — Lee Roy Armstrong, 83, passed away Monday, Dec. 12, 2016, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. The husband of Joyce S. Armstrong, he was born on Aug. 12, 1933, to the late Lee Roy and Dorothy (Neal) Armstrong in Southport, N.C.

He was an avid bass fisherman, often called the godfather of bass fishing in Wilmington, N.C. He was named bass master of the year several times throughout his fishing career.

Roy is survived by his loving spouse of 30 years, Joyce; four daughters, Joni Sloter, Janet Hill, Kimrey Hilton and Charlotte Safrit; one son, Donnie Cyphers; two sisters, Barbara Haas and Becky Johnson; and 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, Dec. 15, at Masonboro Baptist Church, 1501 Beasley Road, Wilmington, with Dr. Gordon Wright officiating. A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to Masonboro Baptist Church would be appreciated.
