Edson Baldwin Olds IV, known as ‘Ned’ to loved ones and friends, 77, died Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington after a brief struggle with pulmonary fibrosis.
Ned leaves behind his wife and closest friend of 55 years, Carol Jean Gaddy Olds; three children, including his daughter, Carol O. Redden, and her husband, Charles, of Cary, and daughter, Laura O. Weaver, and son, Edson Baldwin Olds V., and his wife, Mary, all of Ellicott City, Md.; seven grandchildren, Courtney Mangieri, and her husband, Christopher, Caitlin and Chase Redden, Libby and Jay Weaver and Delaney and Brennan Olds; one great-grandchild, Wesley Mangieri; and sister, Virginia B. Goshdigian of Ashton, Md.
Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Ned graduated from St. Albans School in 1957 and Washington & Lee University in 1961. He met his wife, Carol, at Sherwood Forest, a summer camp on the Severn River, and they were married in 1960.
Ned started his career with IBM and held a variety of positions in data processing, before retiring as senior vice president and treasurer of David L. Babson & Co. in Boston, Mass. After retiring, Ned and Carol moved to Wilmington, where Ned served as the president of the Investors Roundtable, president of Landfall Country Club and as an officer of the Landfall Foundation in Wilmington.
A passionate golfer, he shot his age at 75 and had three holes-in-one. Ned was a member of Columbia Country Club in Bethesda, Md.; Landfall Country Club in Wilmington and had recently joined the Sanctuary Golf Club in Sanibel, Fla.
Ned loved life, his family and his friends. No one was a stranger to Ned; he enjoyed everyone he met. He had a big laugh and an even bigger heart and will be missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, at the Frank H. Kenan Chapel at Landfall, Wilmington. A memorial service at the St. Albans School Chapel will be held at a later date in Washington, D.C.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the St. Alban’s School or the Landfall Foundation.
