Joan Elise Carpenter, remembered for her knitting, community outreach

Joan Elise Carpenter of Hampstead peacefully passed away on Monday, Dec. 28, 2015 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Born in Northampton, Massachusetts, Joan lived most of her life in New England before moving in 1996 to North Carolina, where she and her husband Bob began retirement and continued their community interaction. Both were involved in their church, Hampstead Kiwanis Club and Meals on Wheels.

Joan will be remembered for her wonderful crafting skills. Each year she knitted over 100 hats to donate to various organizations. Anyone who has ever received a gift of her knitting or embroidery is truly blessed.

She is predeceased by her husband Bob, eldest son Terry and two brothers, Robert and William. Surviving are her children Carol Barber (Len), Reed, Bruce (Susan), Brad (Melody), Bonnie (Alfred DelCiampo), Doug (Brenda), Todd (Fernanda) and Erik Hein, who has been a special member of our family for many years. She was well-loved and will be missed by her grandchildren Jansen Barber, Amy Sunkten, Tiffany Carpenter, Catherine Carpenter, David Carpenter, Michelle Carpenter, Josh Carpenter and Lauren Carpenter. She will also be missed by her extended grandchildren Roy, April, Greg, Charlie, Edson, Jessica, Lindsey, Brian and her great grandchildren.

Her family sends many thanks to New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s ICU staff for their care and comfort in Joan’s last few days and also to the staff at Stonebridge Assisted Living in Hampstead.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2 at Andrews Mortuary in Hampstead. Joan will be laid to rest in the family plot in Granby, Massachusetts at a later date.
