Joseph Edward Coston, 93, of Wilmington, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2015, at Commons at Brightmore.

He was born Jan. 20, 1922, in Maysville, to the late Luther and Laura Coston.

Joseph was a proud veteran of the military. having served in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945, then in the Air Force, where he retired after 25 years at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. Joseph was a medic during his entire military career. He served stateside for many years before serving in China, Burma and India.

For many years, Joseph was an active member of Temple Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clavis Coston; his twin brother, Edwin Francis Coston; siblings, Andrew W. Coston and wife Nadine and Franklin D. Coston, Mary A. Lehrschall and husband Fred and Hazel E. Howard.

Survivors include his daughter, Joy Huber; grandchildren, Ronald Karl Huber II and wife Shelley, John Edward Huber and wife Jennie, and Karla Joy Huber; great-grandchildren, Jason and Bailey Smith and Emery Huber; sister, Vivian I. Thompson; 28 nieces and nephews; and four sisters-in-law, Sue Williams, Fay Flowers, Hazel Collum and Ruby Barnhill.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13 at Andrews Valley Chapel, with Dr. Steven Spangler of Temple Baptist Church officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Prospect Cemetery on the corner of Military Cutoff and Market Street in Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple Baptist Church’s building fund or to Liberty Hospice Care.

The family wishes to thank the staff at The Commons of Brightmore and Liberty Hospice for their care and compassion, especially during our loved one’s last days.
