Katherine V. Rochelle, 99, served on the Pender County Board of Elections

Two weeks before her milestone 100th birthday, Katherine V. Rochelle was called to heaven. She died peacefully at home with her daughter holding her hand on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015.

Katherine was born on Nov. 4, 1915, in Roanoke Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents, Irene Vestal and Charles Vestal; husband, R.W. Rochelle; brother, Charles Vestal; and sister, Grace Vestal Rochelle.

Katherine is survived by her daughter, Ginger, of the home; grandson, Clint Connor and wife Tami, of Hampstead; granddaughter, Christy Neeley and husband Jeff, of Hampstead; great-granddaughters, Emma Neeley and Brooke Neeley, who always put a smile on her face and brought her tons of joy; sister-in-law, Charlotte Rochelle; and many dear nieces and nephews.

Katherine was always very active in community service. Upon moving to Washington Acres in 1972, both she and her husband involved themselves in many different community activities. Katherine sold tickets for oyster roasts, fish fries, Princess Pageant, Miss Spot Festival Pageant as well as the annual Spot Festival Fish dinner each year. Katherine was a member of the Hampstead Woman’s Club, served on the Pender County Board of Elections and was a member of Topsail Presbyterian Church.

Katherine’s dedication to her community, while constant, never distracted her from her devotion to her family. Affectionately known as “Granny,” she always placed her family first. There is a magnet on Granny’s refrigerator given to her by neighbors which has the inscription, “Granny always has time.” And this has certainly been true in her untiring devotion to and support of her grandchildren and daughter.

Katherine was a special person. If one word describes her, it is “dependable.” The community and her family have always depended on Katherine and she has never let them down.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, at Topsail Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Jake A. Young and Associate Pastor Nick Ferrante. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. Katherine will be buried beside her husband in a private family ceremony at the Rochelle Family Cemetery at Harrison Creek.

Please leave online condolences for the family at Andrews Mortuary.
