Stephen Lowell Mueller, 68, Vietnam veteran who served as a US Air Force sergeant

obit flagStephen Lowell Mueller, of Wilmington, died at Lower Cape Fear Hospice on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015. He was 68.

He was born Feb. 5, 1947, son of the late Herbert P. and Martha S. Mueller in Bethesda, Ohio. He was preceded in death by five older brothers, Dick, Bob, Grant, Terry and Mike Mueller.

He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Carol Mohr Mueller; six children, Lisa Johnson, of Augusta, Georgia, Rick Southerland, of Baltimore and Elizabeth Mueller, Heidi Mueller, Garrett Southerland and Kristen Herring (Henry), all of Wilmington; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Steve was a Vietnam veteran and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the American Legion for 45 years.

After retiring from the U.S. Department of Labor as a mine, safety and health inspector in 1987, and until late last year, he continued to do safety work for companies along the east coast as well as Kakegawa, Japan.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, at Andrews Mortuary Market Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, at the funeral home, followed by burial at Oakdale Cemetery, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Legion-Wilmington Post 10, Lower Cape Fear Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
