
William E. “Red” Grimstead, of Wilmington, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, at his residence. He was 89.
He was born in Wilmington on July 30, 1926, the son of the late William C. Grimstead and Evelyn Zellers Grimstead. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Grimstead, and his sister, Sybil Bowers.
He proudly served in WWII in the U.S. Navy as a crew member of USS-LST 844. He retired from Nabisco after 41 years of service. Red was affectionately known as the “Cookie Man.” He loved being outdoors, was an avid fisherman and loved to be around people, and always had a joke or funny saying.
Surviving are his children, Kathy Temple and husband Tom, of Durham and Michael Grimstead and wife Susan, of Wilmington; grandchildren, Amanda Walters and husband Josh, Valerie Grimstead and Lydia Grimstead; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015, at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
