Chester Ray Hunter, Sr.

Born on Sept. 5, 1933, Chester Ray Hunter, Sr., of Wallace, found the greatest joy of all in his family, especially his daughter, “Sissy.”

Mr. Hunter died at the age of 80 on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

A devoted husband and loving daddy, granddaddy, brother and friend, Mr. Hunter viewed his family as the light of his life and enjoyed every minute he spent with them. In his spare time, Mr. Hunter loved to garden and always shared the fruits of his labor with others. He spent a lot of time with his friends at the VFW and playing bingo. Mr. Hunter’s big heart showed daily; he would give the shirt off his back if needed and was always ready to lend a helping hand.

He supported St. Jude Children’s Hospital and the VA every chance he could. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korea Conflict, was a 50-year member of the VFW and was retired from working for 26 years with JP Stevens. Mr. Hunter’s family is grateful to God for his life and for your kindness, friendship and prayers.

Mr. Hunter was preceded in death by his parents, Liston Edward Hunter and Bessie Padrick Hunter Norris; and brothers, Roger, Elmer and Robert Hunter.

Surviving is his loving wife of 58 years, Gaynell Mobley Hunter; children, Chester “Ray” Hunter, Jr. of Wallace, Edward “Eddie” Hunter (Laura) of Burgaw, Gregory “Greg” Hunter (Joann) of Watha, Vanessa H. “Sissy” Spearman (David) of Teachey and Chris Hunter of Wallace; grandchildren, Sam Hunter, Shayna Brock (Justin), Scott Hunter, Braxton Spearman, Brandon Mathis and Katelyn, Brianna and Michael; brother, Nelson Hunter (DeLois) of Castle Hayne; sister, Ruth Ezzell of Garner; sister-in-law, Arlene Hunter of Scottsdale, Ariz.; numerous nieces, nephews, friends and his canine companion, Jemma.

Graveside funeral service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at Rockfish Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Wallace.
