WILMINGTON — The first Wawa in New Hanover County officially has an opening date.
Wawa, Inc. announced Monday its new location at 6800 Carolina Beach Road will open its doors on Friday, May 29. The store marks the company’s first entry into the Wilmington market as it continues a rapid expansion across North Carolina.
The convenience giant has moved quickly since opening its first North Carolina site in May 2024, launching 17 stores statewide in under two years. Wawa plans to continue that pace, aiming to open six to eight stores per year in the state until it reaches a total of 90 locations.

“We are excited to spread our wings to Wilmington and bring our unique combination of fresh food and beverage, convenience and service to this region for the very first time,” Wawa President Brian Schaller said in a press release.
According to the company, each new store brings an average of 35 jobs to the area. Wawa is an associate-owned company, with employees holding a 39% stake in the business through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan.
The retailer is also offering a “Taste of Wawa” preview event on May 28, the day before the official opening. Residents who want to attend can share their favorite memories or stories involving the brand online for a chance to receive an invitation.
The new facility will feature the brand’s standard offerings, including fuel services, freshly prepared foods, and specialty beverages.
