WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH — Residents and businesses in Wrightsville Beach will soon see activity around their water meters as the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority begins a significant upgrade project this month. This work is a precursor to the Town of Wrightsville Beach’s water and sewer services consolidating into CFPUA’s system on September 30, 2025.

The primary phase, starting in late June, involves upgrading approximately 2,700 customers’ water meters with new remote reading technology. This process will not require the removal or replacement of existing meters, and customers’ water service will not be interrupted.

The remote reading technology, already in use across other CFPUA service areas, allows staff to read meters without needing to access private property. The initial phase is expected to take several months and be completed by the consolidation date.

In a separate project, about 120 older water meters that cannot be retrofitted with the new technology will be replaced entirely. This replacement work is scheduled to begin in early July. Customers affected by these replacements will receive direct notification, and water service may be briefly interrupted during the process.

To perform this work, CFPUA has enlisted Vanguard Utility Service and A.C. Schultes of Carolina. Residents might see their staff working near water meters during regular business hours, Monday through Friday. All workers will carry official identification. For more information regarding the consolidation of services, residents are encouraged to visit www.CFPUA.org/WrightsvilleBeach.
