PENDER COUNTY — The Financial Crimes Unit of the Conference of District Attorneys and the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating allegations of embezzlement by the Pender County Clerk of Superior Court’s Office.
In an Oct. 11 letter to SBI special agent in charge Chris Brenzel, District Attorney Ben David requested an investigation into alleged improprieties in the court’s office. David said Pender County Sheriff Alan Cutler alerted him to the complaint and the two officials jointly urged a broader investigation.
The District Attorney and Sheriff’s Office opted out of the inquiry due to their working relationship with the clerk’s office.
“It is vital to the administration of justice that these relationships continue while these allegations are being investigated,” David wrote in the letter.
SBI spokesperson Angie Grube told PCD the case has been referred to the Conference of DAs; the Conference did not answer a request for comment by press.
“The investigation is ongoing,” Grube told Port City Daily. “No additional information is available at this time.”
