SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Residents in the Cape Fear region are encouraged to join the nationwide effort to end hungry, leaving out food donations for pickup.
On Saturday, May 13, letter carriers will be picking up donations left by mailboxes to benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina’s service area and its network of partner agencies.
Last year, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina collected nearly 80,000 pounds of food.
Stamp Out Hunger Day is an annual event that helps support food insecurities for more than 500,000 people. The public is asked to place bags filled with nonperishable food items (please, no glass) next to their mailboxes to be collected and brought back to postal branches. Food bank volunteers then collect the items on site.
A few of the most needed items this year include:
- Canned meals: stews, soups, chicken, salmon, tuna, ravioli (pop-top cans are preferred)
- Peanut Butter
- Cereal
- Canned fruits and vegetables
- Rice, pasta, dried beans, spices
- Hygiene items: toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving items, soap
- Paper products: toilet paper, paper towels
- Infant products: diapers, wipes, formula, infant cereal
