WILMINGTON — The MLK Celebration Committee of Southeastern NC will host its 21st annual Martin Luther King Day Parade on January 16, 2023, with a week of events leading up to it.
A press conferance on Jan. 9 at 11 a.m. will kick off the events, taking place at the MLK Center (401 S Eighth St.).
Thursday, Jan. 12, will host the Potluck for Peace in partnership with the YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m., also at the MLK Center.
The MLK Celebration Banquet will be held on Friday, Jan. 13, at 6pm at the Hotel Ballast. The banquet will feature keynote speaker Marc Morial, former New Orleans Mayor and President and CEO of the National Urban League, the nation’s largest historic civil rights and urban advocacy organization.
On Saturday, Jan. 14, there will be three events beginning with the MLK Breakfast, which is in partnership with the New Hanover County Branch NAACP, from 8 to 10 a.m. at Union Missionary Baptist Church (2711 Princess Place Drive). Family Fun Day in partnership with Wilmington Parks & Recreation will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the MLK Center. Rip the Runway in partnership with If Better is Possible will start at 6 p.m. at the Cape Fear Community College Union Station Building (502 N Front St.).
On Sunday, Jan. 15, the committee will host an Ecumenical Service in honor of Dr. King’s legacy from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The location has yet to be determined.
On Monday, Jan. 16, lineup for the parade will take place at 7 a.m. at the Wilson Center parking lot, and the parade will begin at 11 a.m, moving south from Third and Hanover streets before turning onto Princess and then Fourth Street, then left again at Hanover Street.
