BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Equipment failure led to thousands of gallons of wastewater flowing into a retention pond in Leland Wednesday morning.
Brunswick County Public Utilities reported 4,250 gallons of untreated wastewater discharged into the body of water, which filters into a tributary of the Brunswick River. The leak was caused by the a failure of a 2-inch camlock fitting on an air release valve, which connected to a sewer force main near 112 Village Rd.
Officials expect the discharge began around 7 a.m., was isolated by 8:57 a.m. and repaired by 9:10 a.m.
