NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Starting this month, a free six-week art and creative writing class will be offered at the local art museum.

Cameron Art Museum is welcoming current Novant Health — NHRMC’s Zimmer Cancer patients and survivors to participate. No art or writing experience is necessary; the classes include gallery visits, writing, art-making and meditation.

“We are honored to be able to support cancer patients and survivors on their journey through this class, which focuses on the healing power of art as a means of stress reduction,” CAM deputy director Heather Wilson said in a press release.

“Art Enhances Health at CAM” takes place beginning Nov. 14 and wrap on Dec. 19.  the goal is to improve mental and emotional health by providing a creative outlet of expression. The classes are provided as a distraction to the anxiety and depression that can happen in patients struggling with health issues.
