Alleged bank robber arrested over weekend

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — A 38-year-old male was taken into custody for the alleged common law robbery of a PNC Bank that took place Saturday.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office arrested Elijah Muhammad McFarland around midnight on Oct. 30. Law enforcement tracked McFarland at a local hotel and transported him to the New Hanover County Detention Facility, where he is being held with a $250,000 secure bond.

The sheriff’s office was dispatched to the Murrayville area at 2314 N College Rd. on Oct. 29 where they were told around 10 a.m. a man approached the teller and passed a note requesting cash. The bank employee gave him an undisclosed amount of money from the drawer; he exited the building and left the scene in a vehicle waiting for him in the Lowes Foods parking lot nearby.

McFarland will appear in court on Oct. 31, according to inmate details from the detention center.
