Man sentenced to 118 years for multiple counts of rape of stepdaughter

Alfredo Duran-Rivas

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — A 34-year-old man was sentenced to prison Thursday for a myriad of sexual assault charges on his stepdaughter.

Alfredo Duran-Rivas was found guilty after a four-day trial in the New Hanover County Superior Court on three counts of rape of a child, one count of statutory sex offense of a child, four counts of taking indecent liberties with a child, five counts of first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, and five counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

Based on an investigation by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, evidence was presented that concluded Duran-Rivas sexually abused his stepdaughter in 2017 and 2018 on multiple occasions. The evidence also showed the defendant filmed the sexual assaults and saved the recordings on two of his cell phones.

The Hon. Judge Jason Disbrow sentenced Duran-Rivas to a minimum of 118 years in the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction.
