BRUNSWICK COUNTY — A volunteer with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office has passed away in plane crash reported in South Carolina last week.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed a single-engine plane crash in Horry County on Sept. 14. Two people were aboard: 72-year-old Barrie McMurtrie and 66-year-old Terry Druffell. Both men from Ocean Isle Beach perished.
Druffel was a Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office volunteer. According to the office, Druffel began volunteering in October 2020 and served mainly with the Marine Patrol Unit.
“BCSO volunteers are family to us and we are deeply saddened by Terry’s passing,” the sheriff’s office released on social media.
The FAA noted in a report that the Piper PA-28R experienced engine issues and crashed in a wooded area of McNeill Road in Myrtle Beach.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time,” the post continued.
