SURF CITY — In an effort to bring in more tourists during the off-season, Surf City is planning an inaugural music event for this fall.

Sponsored by Corona Seltzer, Surf City Live will be held on Nov. 5 at 4:30 p.m. at Soundside Park, located at 517 Roland Ave. The headliner will be country superstar group Diamond Rio, with Paige King Johnson as the opener.

“Surf City Live brings the big city concert experience right here in our own backyard,” special events supervisor James Adams said in a press release.

The event will also have food trucks, a merchandise tent and beverage tents on site.

Surf City is looking to expand its events during the months of November to February to attract visitors and this is just one of many planned to fil that objective.

“This annual event is a great way to invite economic activity to Surf City during what we would consider our slower months,” Adams said in the release. “Our goal is to invite big name artists each year to participate in Surf City Live. “

Grammy-award winners Diamond Rio recently celebrated its 30th anniversary and has sold more than 10 million albums, released two Greatest Hits albums and a live Christmas project, earned five multi-week No. 1 singles, 22 Top 10 singles, three certified Platinum and five gold albums and released an autobiography in 2009. The band has also earned a Dove Award, six Vocal Group of the Year wins (CMA and ACM) and is known for its charitable commitments as long-time spokespeople for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Collectively, they have raised over $1 million for nonprofits and earned the Minnie Pearl Humanitarian Award.

The six-member group has remained altogether since 1989 and comprises Marty Roe (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Gene Johnson (fiddle, mandolin, guitar, tenor vocals), Jimmy Olander (lead guitar, banjo), Brian Prout (drums), Dan Truman (keyboard) and Dana Williams (bass guitar, baritone vocals).

Diamond Rio signed with Artisa Records and in 1991 with the release of “Meet in the Middle” became the first country group in history to reach No. 1 with a debut single. The band is also known for hits like “How Your Love Makes Me Feel,” “One More Day,” “Beautiful Day,” and “Unbelievable.”

Paige King Johnson is a North Carolina native female country artist who picked up her first guitar at age 9. She’s opened for acts such as Kane Brown, Joe Nichols, Gabby Barrett, Jimmie Allen, Scotty McCreery, Neal McCoy and James Otto.

Johnson moved to Nashville and expanded her career at the Bluebird Cafe. Three-time Carolina Country Music Awards winner as Female Vocalist of the Year, Country Emerging New Artist and Tour of the Year, Johnson released her debut single, “Water Down the Whiskey” in 2019.

Tickets to Surf City Live range from $25 to $50 and can be purchased online.
