BRUNSWICK COUNTY — There is such a thing as a lucky penny, at least for one Bolivia resident who used one to win him $100,000.

John Grant, 59, stopped at the May Way Company on Sunset Harbor for gas and bought a scratch-off lottery ticket as well. On the way back to his truck, he picked a penny up off the ground and used it to scratch off his Fabulous Fortune ticket.

“I guess it was fate,” Grant said in a press release.

He sat in front of the Intracoastal Waterway and watched some men fish as he revealed his fate.

“My heart was beating real fast,” Grant said in the release. “I wasn’t sure what I was seeing.”

His ticket earned him a $100,000 win. After state and federal taxes, Grant collected his $71,019 prize at lotter headquarters in Raleigh on Tuesday. With his new money, he said he planned to put most in savings but also might buy a new Chevy Silverado truck.

Fabulous Fortune debuted in July with six $3-million prizes and 18 $100,000 wins. Four $3-million tickets and 12 $100,000 wins still remain to be claimed.

Ticket sales from scratch-offs make it possible for the lottery to raise an average of $2.5 million daily for education. Brunswick County received $5.6 million in 2021, which went toward a combination of scholarships, financial aid, non-instructional support, school transportation, construction and pre-K programs.
