WILMINGTON — Earlier in the year city staff completed a study of Wilmington’s parking fees compared to peer municipalities — Asheville, Charlotte, Charleston, Chapel Hill, etc. Its findings determined the City of Wilmington parking rates were significantly lower.
Upon staff suggestion — and support from the city’s Downtown Parking Advisory Committee — council voted in its 2023 fiscal-year budget to incrementally increase rates over the next three years.

“The majority of these increases will help get our parking fund to where it needs to be to maintain our facilities over the course of 5, 10, 15 and 30 years,” city spokesperson Jennifer Dandron told Port City Daily in March.
In 2021, parking revenue brought the city $2.4 million to cover annual operating expenditures.
As of Monday, Aug. 1., the following new rates will be implemented in downtown’s parking spaces:
On‐Street Meters:
· $2 per hour
Market & Second St Decks:
· First 30 minutes are free
· Max fee is $12
