Oak Island first-responders called to beach for resuscitation efforts

OAK ISLAND — Right before 5:30 p.m. Monday, Brunswick County area first responders were called to the beach access near 29th Pl. East for what was reported as a drowning. The 911 Center told officials the patient was out of the water with a bystander conducting CPR.

As officials arrived on the scene — Oak Island Water and Rescue, Oak Island Fire Department, Oak Island Police Department, Brunswick County EMS, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, Marine Patrol, and United States Coast Guard — it was determined to be a medical event, not a result from a swimmer in distress.

Care was being conducted by beachgoers, including a physician. Agencies began advanced cardiac life support on the beach and transferred the patient to the ambulance on E Beach Drive. Despite extended resuscitation efforts, the patient did not survive, according to officials.
