Carolina Beach plans for 13th mural, announces next artist

CAROLINA BEACH — The Carolina Beach Mural Project has announced the artist it has chosen to create mural number 13 — “Bountiful Butterflies (The Journey Home).”

The public art project will celebrate indigenous butterflies on the island — Monarch Butterflies, Henry’s Elfin, Common Buckeye, Palamedes Swallowtail and the Gulf Fritillary, in a partnership with the N.C. Wildlife Foundation. A fundraiser will be held as part of the mural unveiling.

“The Butterfly Highway is a statewide conservation restoration initiative that aims to restore native pollinator habitats to areas impacted by urbanization, land use change and agriculture across North Carolina,” a press release notes,” a press release stated. “From backyard Pollinator Pitstops to large-scale roadside habitat restoration, the project is creating a network of native flowering plants to support butterflies, bees, birds and other pollen and nectar dependent wildlife.”

The committee for CBMP chose Beka Butts, an artist based in Greensboro, N.C. Butts has created large-scale works and street arts of vibrant color and design for years.

The mural installation will take place in late September at Island Massage & Spa, 501 N. Lake Park Blvd. There will be an artist unveiling and meet-and-greet to follow.
