Water main leak to affect downtown traffic near CF Memorial Bridge

UPDATE: The southbound lane of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge exit ramp opened at 6:15 p.m.; the northbound lane from the crossover to the bridge remains closed.

WILMINGTON — Barricades are up in downtown Wilmington to close off traffic near the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge at South Front Street.

A water main leak is under repair and traffic is closed on the southbound ramp of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge (northbound ramp is open), as well as both directions in the 1000 to 12000 blocks of South Front, from Wright to Marsteller streets.

A detour is set up directing motorists to South Third Street; drivers should proceed through the areas with caution and expect delays.

The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority noted in a release:

  • Southbound traffic on South Front Street can detour using Castle Street to South Third Street.
  • Northbound traffic on South Front Street can detour using Greenfield Street to South Third Street.
  • Northbound traffic from Carolina Beach Road and Burnett Boulevard are also advised to detour using South Third Street.

Officers from the Wilmington Police Department are assisting with traffic control.

The closure is expected to last around six hours — until the early evening at least — as crews repair a leak on a CFPUA water main.

Two commercial customers are under a precautionary boil water advisory in connection with the leak and have been notified by CFPUA.
