Men identified in fatal Kure Beach shooting

KURE BEACH — Police have released the names of two men who perished in a shooting that took place Tuesday on Pleasure Island.

The 55-year-old victim has been confirmed as John Allen Garisto and the deceased suspect is 61-year-old William Henry Bennett.

Kure Beach Police Department responded to shots fired around 2:30 p.m. on May 17 and upon arrival discovered Garisto with multiple gunshot wounds. While investigating the scene, and attempting life-saving measures on the victim, officers heard a single shot fired nearby in Bennett’s house.

With the assistance of the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Tactical unit, officers entered residence and located the deceased suspect.

The area of Ocean View Avenue was blocked off into Tuesday as a crime scene.

According to police, the investigation is still ongoing. Officials believe this to be an isolated incident.
