NCDOT suspends bridge replacement in Brunswick

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — The discovery of a protected species under a bridge slated to be replaced in Brunswick County has suspended operations until further notice, the N.C. Department of Transportation reported.

Environmental agencies found a Carolina Wren nesting under the bridge. The 50-year-old bridge is located along N.C. 87 on Maco Road. A portion over Batarora Branch was to be demolished and rebuilt, with completion planned for fall.

How long crews will suspend construction is unknown at this time, according to NCDOT. Another update will be dispersed to media as a more thorough timeline is assessed

The bridge replacement is estimated to cost $1.2 million.
