WILMINGTON — Big Dawg Productions is holding auditions for its summertime play, “School Girls; or, The African Mean Girls Play.”
Written by Jocelyn Bioh, the play will take place Thursday, June 16, through Sunday, June 19, as well as Thursday, June 23, through Sunday, June 26. Auditions will be held Apr. 18 through 19, at 7 p.m. at the former Castle Street Playhouse, 613 Castle St.
Performances will occur at the Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts in the Ruth and Becky Stein Studio Theatre and will be directed by Fracaswell Hyman.
The timeline of the play is 1986. Paulina, eager to win the Miss Global Universe pageant, has taken notice of her competition: the beautiful and talented Ericka. The play addresses similarities and differences seen in teenage girls all over the world and tackles internalized racism.
Roles needed to be filled include six Black high-school-aged women, 16 and older, and two Black women who look in their 40s. Here is the cast breakdown:
Paulina: 18, popular and beautiful high school girl
Ericka: 18, biracial with light skin and the ability to sing
Ama: 18, Paulina’s best friend, but does not always agree with the way Paulina treats others
Nana: 16, quiet, and becomes a target of Paulina often because of her weight
Mercy: 16 and does all she can to stay in the good graces of Paulina
Gift: 16, best friends with Mercy, always trying to appear “cool” to others
Headmistress Francis: woman in her 40s, head of Aburi Girls Boarding School and loves her students
Eloise Amponsah: 40s, classmates with Francis, as well as Miss Ghana 1966, but remains a recruiter for the pageant presently
