NEW HANOVER COUNTY — The Pandemic Operations Center is now offering second boosters to some people that meet age and/or health-related criteria.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the second dose of either mRNA vaccine — Pfizer (Comirnaty) and Moderna — for people 50 and older, as well as immunocompromised individuals Tuesday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also signed off on the recommendation.

Both vaccines are available at the PanOps center — the hub of Covid-19 testing and vaccinations on Greenfield Street, overseen by the New Hanover County Health and Human Services Department. Those seeking a fourth shot must have waited four months from their last booster dose.
“Whether you are getting your second booster or thinking about getting your initial COVID-19 vaccine, we strongly encourage everyone in New Hanover County to visit us at the Pandemic Operations Center to get vaccinated as we continue the fight against this virus,” Pandemic Operations manager Jon Campbell said in a press release.
Individuals who are authorized to receive a second booster may choose which mRNA vaccine to receive. Below is the guidance the PanOps team will follow:
- A second booster dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine may be administered to individuals 50 years of age and older at least 4 months after getting an initial booster.
- A second booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine may be administered to individuals 12 years or older with certain kinds of immunocompromise at least 4 months after their initial booster. These are people who have undergone solid organ transplantation, or who are living with conditions that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromise.
- A second booster dose of the Moderna vaccine may be administered to individuals 18 years of age and older with the same certain kinds of immunocompromise at least 4 months after the initial booster dose.
Appointments can be made by visiting TakeMyShot.NC.gov; walk-ups are accepted based on availability. The Pandemic Operations Center is located at 1507 Greenfield St.
